In Uganda, social entrepreneur Jamila Mayanja is using the power of the sun to change the lives of young girls. Through her nonprofit organization, Smart Girls Foundation, she has developed a solar-powered backpack that not only charges a lamp for studying at night but also serves as a discreet way for girls to carry essential feminine hygiene products to school. Here

By addressing the practical and social challenges that often prevent girls from accessing education, Mayanja’s innovative solution is helping to break down barriers and empower the next generation of leaders. The Smart Bag, as it is called, is equipped with a solar panel that charges a portable LED lamp, eliminating the need for harmful and expensive kerosene lamps that many children in rural Uganda rely on for nighttime studying. Moreover, the backpacks are made from recycled plastic, further contributing to a more sustainable future. This not only reduces waste but also provides a durable and waterproof material that helps protect the girls’ menstrual supplies from the elements.

The impact of the Smart Bag has been profound. With the ability to study after dark, girls are able to improve their academic performance and stay in school, even during their menstrual cycles, to learn more. This is a critical step towards breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering young women to become leaders in their communities.

Mayanja’s work has garnered international attention, with the Smart Bag project receiving support from organizations like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and collaborations with renowned figures like actress Lupita Nyong’o. These partnerships have helped to scale the initiative, reaching thousands of girls in rural Uganda and beyond.

The solar-powered backpack is a shining example of how innovation and social entrepreneurship can come together to create lasting change. By addressing the unique challenges faced by girls in developing regions, Mayanja and her team are not only improving educational outcomes but also fostering a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
UNFPA supported Smart Girls Foundation in Uganda to design and produce Smart Bags, to help girls of school age to manage menstrual hygiene and have a school bag with all they need, allowing the girls no to miss school days.
